Shrewsbury Prison - Living History Days

Experience 200 Years of Crime & Punishment

Step back in time at our Living History Days as we bring history to life with immersive storytelling.

Our Living History Days will transport you through the harsh realities of crime and punishment from the Georgian era to modern times.  Here's what awaits you::

·      Meet Costumed Characters: Step into the past as you interact with costumed actors. From prisoners to officers to key figures from the past, each character shares their story through immersive storytelling. Ask questions, dig deeper and experience history up close.

·      Prison Life Uncovered: Discover what crimes were committed through the centuries, what punishments were given and the grim realities of incarceration, plus the chilling tales of execution.

·      Life Behind Bars: Get a glimpse into the day-to-day of prison life and how conditions changed over time. Find out what they ate, what ‘slopping out’ means and what it was really like to live in such harsh environments.

·      Hands-On Activities: Try your hand at oakum picking, once a gruelling prison task, and step into the pillories for a photo opportunity that brings history to life.

·      Demonstrations of Hard Labour: Watch live demonstrations of historical punishments and learn about the infamous Crank, Stone-Breaking and the Shot Drill.

·      Learn About the Suffragettes: Discover who the Suffragettes were, why they were imprisoned and the punishments they faced for fighting for women’s rights.
