Shepton Mallet Prison - Living History Days
Experience 400 Years of Crime & Punishment
Step back in time at our Living History Days as we bring history to life, commemorating 400 years since our doors first opened in 1625.
Our Living History Days will transport you through the harsh realities of crime and punishment, from the Jacobean era to modern times. Here’s what awaits you:
· Meet Costumed Characters: Step into the past as you interact with costumed actors. From prisoners to officers to key figures from the past, each character shares their story through immersive storytelling. Ask questions, dig deeper and experience history up close.
· Prison Life Uncovered: Discover what crimes were committed through the centuries, what punishments were given and the grim realities of incarceration, plus the chilling tales of execution.
· Life Behind Bars: Get a glimpse into the day-to-day of prison life. Discover what prisoners ate, how they survived disease and poor sanitation, and what life was really like in these brutal conditions.
· Engage in Hands-On Activities: Try your hand at oakum picking, a gruelling prison task, and step into the pillories for a photo opportunity that brings history to life.
· Explore WWII History: Step into a lesser-known chapter of the prison’s past: the U.S. military occupation during World War II.
· Uncover Secrets: Gather round and listen as Mrs. Johnson reveals ‘the secret hoard’ and other forgotten stories.
